Steven Rea’s book, Hollywood Rides a Bike, was recently published and has been frequently discussed in the last week or so throughout the web. I’ve been following his blog on Tumblr and enjoy the photos he’s been able to dig up of celebrities on bikes. Ted Johnson from Commute by Bike also likes the idea of celebrities on bikes; he was promoting the idea of celebrities bike riding to the Oscars. Unfortunately, no celebrity hopped on board this past Sunday. Too bad, too. I think it would have added some spunk to an otherwise drab event.
Some may wonder, “Does it really matter if celebrities are riding bikes or not?” I’d like to say, “Of course not!” But let’s be realistic; our society follows trends and those trends are usually set by the people in the media. And who is in the media more than celebrities (or even quasi-celebrities for that matter!)? Maybe politicians. Although, I think reaching out to a celebrity is more attainable than a politician. And it may be easier to impress an idea on them that they could help popularize. (Where are the Kardashians’ when you need them?!)
