Practical versus Pretty
My Felt Presta Valves covered with a dainty, silver cap. I swapped it out for Schrader valves this week.
I have to admit that I finally ditched my Presta stems on my Felt Cafe 8 tires. I loved the dainty silver caps that covered them, but in the end, I had to go practical instead of pretty. There are definitely some benefits to Presta stems; they supposedly release pressure if the air pressure is too high. The tips turn to release pressure then tighten up to keep it in. Had I known this beforehand, perhaps that would have swayed my decision to ditch them.
Yet, filling the Presta stems was difficult to say the least. The air leaked out as I filled them making it almost impossible to get the right pressure. My air pump also required a special adapter to fill the slender stems which meant if I was out and about and needed air, I was out of luck. So, this weekend I switched over to Schrader tubes to make my life easier. Now, ugly, black caps cover my stems. (This is going to be remedied soon by a trip to Auto Zone).
Let’s face it, practical sometimes wins out over pretty.
