Rarely do I get the opportunity to visit a modern bicycle shop that hasn’t forgotten its heritage. Conte’s Bike Shop of Newport News Virginia is such a place.
Established in 1957, the showroom space is sprinkled with classic bicycles true to this era, like the Schwinn Black Phantom pictured above. However, only those brave enough to risk the old stairs up to the attic see the really good stuff. It stores over 50 years of old models, trade-ins, and spare parts that an enthusiast could happily search for days.
Many thanks to Walt for granting me access. He’s the always-cheerful store owner, and despite the tangled frames you see below I have it on good authority that he’s able to locate any part he needs at a moment’s notice in this amazing warehouse. Please enjoy these bicycle heritage photographs.
